Rewatched Jul 16, 2012
Tony D'Amico’s review:
When this popped up on Starz I was psyched since it had been at least 7 or 8 years since I last saw it. I was actually working in a theater as a teen when this was released, and I saw it at least 3 or 4 times while it was at the theater, so I was a huge fan of it.
The acting in this film might be the best thing about it. although the script is quite amazing as well, the performances from Woody, Norton and with probably the biggest surprise to me, Courtney Love, were ridiculously great. Woody Harrelson has his finest performance of his career IMO. His portrayal of Larry Flynt was awesome, and this film is also like the first time I really noticed how great of an actor Edward Norton is. But like I said above, Courtney Love was amazing IMO, and I actually thought that she was going to become a great actress, but then she went back to being a crack whore. And she looked amazing in this as well, debate me if you like, but she was great looking prior to getting AIDS.
I think that the Oscars definitely fucked this film in not giving it a nomination for best picture. I don't think it was better than Fargo, but it sure as shit was better than The English Patient, so in that sense Fargo got fucked even harder i guess, since The English Patient is shit, but that's for another discussion. This film is easily going to be in my top whatever of the 90's when i post it.
