A Scanner Darkly 2006 ★★★★★

Watched Jun 20, 2012

I loved the pacing, and it only started confusing me in some parts in the last 20 minutes, but overall, it was an expertly paced, brilliantly characterised look at drug use in a unique world. Whilst some of it left me confused, it left me with the best type of confusion - the one that left me not wanting to look up explanations on wikipedia, but to watch it again, and make up my own mind. So whilst I may not have been smart enough to piece all the specifics together in my mind, I was still left with a sense of wonder from the beautifully crafted world, and a real connection to these (now) despicable characters, despite never experiencing drug use in my own life.

Watch this shit.

  • I couldn't resist looking up what the heck happened on wikipedia, more just to double check whether what I thought was right was right or wrong.

  • Yeah, I had a moment of weakness, and did the same. I feel like I betrayed my own review.

I misunderstood quite a bit, it turns out. I still loved it though; the excellent parts are not the twisty cop plots, but the long drawn out conversations with the drugged up "friends." All that stuff was beautifully done, and *that's* the main reason to watch the film.

  • Absolutely. Whether I "get" a film or not, I don't think that should necessarily be reason to judge it's quality or alter my enjoyment. I mean, David Lynch is pretty effing popular...

  • I felt the same way. I will definitely watch it again.
