The Cabin in the Woods 2012
For a film that turns horror tropes on its head, Tucker and Dale vs Evil is so much more enjoyable and entertaining, and not annoyingly pretentious.

Les Misérables 2012
ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY, ANNE HATHAWAY. Ten reasons to see this film.
Would be 3 stars if I hadn't felt like falling asleep more than twice during the film. But Hooper's direction is so obnoxious, Anne Hathaway/Eddie Redmayne/Aaron Tveit were the only things stopping me from giving it 2 stars.

The Grandmaster 2013
念念不忘,必有迴響。
Classic Wong Kar-wai: stunning visuals with a side dish of aching and yearning melancholy.
But it could also do with better editing, it's obvious that there were some big cuts made. I hope Wong makes a redux or director's cut.

Lawrence of Arabia 1962
Terrible brownface, not a single female character, countless shots of sand, goddamn stunning.
Saw the new restoration at BFI Southbank. Now I need to see it in 70mm.
-
The Chinese Connection 1972
This is such a ridiculous and unintentionally funny film. I had forgotten how racist it was too.
But lbr people see this to watch Bruce Lee serve someone a can of woop ass. A classic.

Wife vs. Secretary 1936
Gable/Loy is almost as good as Powell/Loy. ALMOST. Harlow makes a great turn here too.
-
Ice Cold In Alex 1958
Tense, but uneven.
-
The Amazing Spider-Man 2012
Would be properly great if the script was less cheesy. I'm not talking about Peter Parker's deliberately lame jokes. The action sequences were very well filmed, yay for minimal shakycam.
-
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers 1946
Seriously reminded of Double Indemnity whenever Barbara Stanwyck said 'Waltuh', among other things. Stray observation, Kirk Douglas seems to have really small hands; or it might just be the lighting.

Bel Ami 2012
So many great veteran actors (Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, Philip Glenister) and yet so lacklustre. Robert Pattinson may have enough charisma for the Twilight horde, but he definitely cannot carry this film. Stupid plot, dumb lines, bad movie. Also, very unintentionally funny, which makes it a tad more bearable. Although, I was on a plane with a crappy console that made fast-fowarding very difficult. I would've used that function quite frequently.

Queen Christina 1933
Many many many many close-up shots of diffused light gently caressing Garbo's very symmetrical face. Some cross-dressing involved. Mostly rather entertaining.
