The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2005
I was ready to laugh at this. A magical pair of jeans passed around four friends? But what sounds like an incredibly silly premise is just a framework for some pretty good acting and surprisingly nuanced storytelling (though perhaps the less is said about Alexis Bledel and her storyline the better). The film reminded me how much I miss Amber Tamlyn on screen, and how both America Fererra and Blake Lively are better actresses than their leading shows might give them credit for.

Meet the Parents 2000
My flatmates went "you haven't seen this film? You have to!" Having only heard about the increasingly disappointing sequels (the reviews for Little Fockers in particular were damning) I can see why people still hold up the original as a classic.
It's a modern day slapstick film. If anything, it's an American version of Some Mothers Do Have 'Em, complete with the lead not getting much respect from anyone. Still, what the two have in common is a real heart:…

As nutty as a Charlie Kaufmann film but with a lot of heart, anchored by a sweet and nuanced performance from Will Ferrell. Beautifully integrated infographics for the designery-minded.

Shaun of the Dead 2004
The only film that can make zombies into a comedy while still remaining true to the concept of zombies.
There's one scene where the leads of the film meet up with another parallel group of survivors of the zombie plague. Nearly ten years on, the scene is near a who's-who of British comedy.
