Walter Andrade’s review:
I don't really understand why this film is so bad rated. The way Lynch transits between reality and illusion without never losing his lucidity on what is going on is admirable. Also Sheryl Lee's acting in incredible. But, certainly this is not Lynch as his best, Twin Peaks has a plot too big to be condensed in a movie like this. Sometimes seems like some scenes were made in a rush, in several takes the illumination is weird, almost like it was made to be really a TV program and not a film. Talking about the story, it looks like three or more arguments were mixed in this screenplay, which makes it harder to work properly. However, the essence of the story is clear and promising, but could be better handled.
I have always meant to re-watch Fire Walk With Me. I was a huge Twin Peaks fan, as were many of my friends, and anticipation for this film was high.
I remember a bunch of us going to a theatre that was rather packed with what were obviously other rabid Twin Peaks fans. At the end of the film, you could hear a pin drop.
I think the primary problem was that the film was a prequel to the show, and the audience of the day wanted a sequel. it didn't help that a lot of the material covered in the movie was already semi-covered in the series.
Now that the years have washed away some baggage, I think I'm ready to give it another try.
I haven't seen Twin Peaks, so I actually didn't have any expectations but that this would be a Lynch, so in some ways it was disappointing because the film really looked like a mediocre piece of some television film, but it's worthy a second try. Hope you like it. :D
