Kevin Wight’s review published on Letterboxd :
Extremely loose biopic of Ip Man, master of Wing Chun, and sensei of Bruce Lee among others.
It looks gorgeous, and some of the stylised action is jaw-dropping. Donnie Yen is Ip Man, playing him with a quiet charisma but capable of some serious whoop-ass, most notably against ten hapless karate practitioners.
In truth, the story is extremely slight and scenes featuring his wife and child are just gloss, offering no real insight into the man himself.
Still, this is a visually beautiful film, but when you have the likes of Zhang Yimou marrying ravishing visuals with engaging stories then this starts to pale a little in comparison.
