Michael Mackenzie’s review:
On at least some level, I suspect this was meant to be tongue in cheek, a sort of broad comedic retelling by director Robin Hardy of his 1973 cult classic. The trouble is, it lurches all over the place in terms of tone, often juxtaposing or mixing what should be tension with scenes of broad comedy in a way that results in the film being all over the place - ditto both the acting and the accents. Plus, it's impossible to escape the fact that, some striking shots during the climax aside, the film just looks cheap and, in many places, unprofessional. It's better than the awful Nicolas Cage remake of the original THE WICKER MAN, but the fact that I even feel compelled to point this out shows just how much of a mess this effort is.
Is this the adaptation of Cowboys for Christ? Damn, it's a shame it sucked then
It is, yes, and the fact that Hardy is behind it makes its failure even more difficult to comprehend. There are some good actors in this - Graham McTavish, Clive Russell, Honeysuckle Weeks - but the material they have to work with is so bad that none of them get an opportunity to shine.
