Ron’s review:
I'll start this review of with a quote from my wife "I don't give a shit about these people. I really just wish they would die." Now while I didn't want them to die the first line pretty much sums the film up for me. I couldn't get into these characters at all which resulted in me finding this film very boring. The acting was the best thing about the film, but I just didn't give a shit about these people or their issues therefore I can't recommend this film to anyone who isn't in dire need of a nap.
I know right!
Aww, I wanted to see this in my quest to see all things Hiddleston, but I guess I'll stick to Shakespeare then...
@Diana I watched it because I saw several positive reviews here on Letterboxd and it has like an 82% critic score on metacritic.com. If you had interest in it I'd say watch it for yourself because you may get something out of it. It just didn't work for me at all.
Wokay, I'll check it out then. And you did say that acting was good...
Yeah I had no problem with the acting. It was the characters themselves. It happens sometimes I guess where if you don't care about the people in the film you aren't going to care about the film itself. I didn't like the people and as stated in my review my wife hated them and wanted them dead ; )
That's harsh, they must have really strike a nerve there. But I can totally understand utter disgust with the characters (i.e. most recently Archipelago).
reviewers always give positive reviews to this type of films and documentaries, that another reason I don't batter with those sites. and prefer a letterboxd review anyday...
Ron, sounds like I thought about this film when I saw the trailer, thanks for reassuring my thoughts. thanks!
@Diana yeah it's harsh, but they just weren't likable in my and obviously my wife's opinion.
@Javier No problem, but I pretty much always recommend seeing it for yourself just to make sure. If you had no interest in the first place though I'd definitely say avoid it. Even if you didn't hate the characters like I did you'd still probably find it boring.
I liked the look of this, mainly due to the cast, I'm not really aware of what the film is about, tried to stay spoiler free! Anyway I do understand what you mean about not bein connected with the characters. I did it last night with Boy in the stripped pajamas, a little on purpose as well, but because I detached myself from the characters, I had no real connection with the family and the boys in the tragic events of the film. Thus the film didn't have the emotional impact it's had on a lot of other people.
@Mike It's always interesting how films can affect different people in different ways. I was the opposite on The Boy In the Stripped Pajamas. I really liked that film and cared about the characters.
