The Ron’s review published on Letterboxd:
Damn it, damn it, damn it I wanted to like this more than I did! Being a lifelong video game fan I popped for the video game references at the beginning. It was cool to see characters from games I grew up with on the big screen. So you could say it was of to a good start. Once it gets going though I struggled to stay interested. A big problem I had is the trailers are a bit misleading. We're lead to believe in the trailers that it's a film about a bad guy video game character who wants to be the hero. The problem is that part of the story only serves to set up the actual story which I didn't care as much for. Don't get me wrong as you might suspect he still becomes a hero just not in the way you'd think. My other big issue was with a film like this I expect some laughs and I really didn't laugh all that much. I'd say the overall movie is more cute than funny which is OK, but it would of worked better for me had it been funnier. Overall It's a cute film and worth seeing, but I have a feeling my rating might drop on a re-watch.
For those of you curious about my 2 year old sons thoughts I'm sad to report he didn't have much of a reaction to it. He yelled Mickey Mouse during the opening credits which prompted another kid somewhere else in the cinema to do the same. He sat still for most of it getting restless a couple of times which as you parents out there know is a sign their not that into it. The only time he got really excited was during some racing scenes because he's really into cars right now. He jumped up and down during those scenes throwing his hands up and saying YEAH! As we were leaving I said did you like the movie buddy and his response was uh huh so I guess he at least liked it well enough.
