Recommendations Challenge
I want to challenge the Letterboxd community to take a look at my top films and lists I've made and recommend films to me based on my preferences. It will be a contest. I'll add any film recommended to me that I haven't seen and keep score of who has recommended the most films I end up liking. This will be ongoing because I have a tremendous watchlist as is, but I think it could be fun.
Who recommended the film will be in the notes. Recommending the same film as someone else is fine as long as you feel strongly about it.
I would recommend Network. It's from 1976 and it really is a great film IMO (in my top 10) directed by the late Sidney Lumet. Also, I've noticed you haven't seen many films from before the 1970s which is something I have a problem with also. I don't know if you like political dramas, but Seven Days in May is very good IMO and it can be found entirely on youtube (you just have to add all the parts into a playlist)- www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNXjZJ_0OSg
@3rdRevelation I've heard Network is good so I'll add it to the list. I'll also give Seven Days in May a shot.
I don't have many films before 1970 because I wasn't born until 1976 and didn't become a film buff until my mid to late 20's. There's plenty of films I need/want to see from before then, but they never top my watchlist because more often than not I end up disappointed when I watch a really old film.
I completely understand. I was born in 89, so I still have a lot to watch too. I've had some really good experiences with films from pre-1970, and some bad ones. For example, IMO Citizen Kane is really overrated. I believe It's a Wonderful Life is also on youtube and that might be another film you'd like.
A Bittersweet Life
The Chaser
As you love The Man from Nowhere, you'd more than likely love both of these too!
Yeah my issue is certain things that may have worked back then don't make an impression on me now. For example Repulsion is considered a classic thriller so I watched it for the first time several months ago and didn't find it thrilling or suspenseful at all. It's simply because was suspenseful back then isn't necessarily suspenseful now so it took me out of the experience. Some films can transcend time and hope up well, but a lot can't in my opinion. Citizen Kane is one I still need to see, but I keep putting it off because I'm worried I'll think it's overrated as well. I've seen It's A Wonderful Life and liked it but it's been years since the last time I saw it.
@bizarre I've see The Chaser and thought it was pretty good. I'll add A Bittersweet Life. It's already on my watchlist but not this list.
I know you should be happy though you're in the lead.
AdamMcA scores a point with The Amazing Spider-Man.
AdamMcA scores a point with TDKR.
@AdamMcA Yeah you have a sizable lead, but I've been slow getting around to a lot of these. I'll get to them all eventually.
