Frances Ha 2013
This is a coming of age story for a generation who likes to ride adolescence right into their thirties. Greta Gerwig as Frances is always likable but never quite sympathetic. She feels like so many people I know who are still struggling to get their shit together.

John Dies at the End 2013
The protagonist needs to act. He needs to make a choice, or a change, or somehow grow into the hero. One of the problems I have with the slacker audience surrogate is that I don't continue to find befuddled stumbling through fantastic circumstances amusing. It was great fun to watch Dave try to deal with the unreasonable when the movie kicked off, but as the story fumbled around for an ending, I realized that Dave was no Jack Burton. Maybe…

Miami Connection 1987
Michael Phelps and an excitable Korean guy named "Mark" play in a band called Dragon Sound. They live in a house together with the rest of the band, they study at UCF by day, and play songs about friendship and ninjas at night. They are also orphans. When a motorcycle gang of ninjas from Miami comes to town to push some stupid cocaine on Central Florida, you can bet that the boys from Dragon Sound won't be going down without a fight.

Fish Story 2009
This is a fantastic story about a proto-punk rock song that just might save the world from certain destruction. It starts off deceptively small, then weaves through a number of stories that bring people together in delightfully accidental ways leading to a perfectly absurd conclusion.
