    Psycho IV: The Beginning

Director Mick Garris gives this last of the movie series a unique feel, a lot less trashy than the previous two & with much better performances especially from Henry ‘ET’ Thomas as a young Norman Bates. Anthony Perkins is in the film as Norman, a caller on the telephone to a radio show conducting a phone-in on ‘matricide’, but it’s mainly the flashbacks that make up the majority of the movie & makes for an interesting backstory to the whole saga.

    The Driller Killer

Ferrara stars & directs this grimy classic of the genre, the backdrop of the New York punk dropouts and the random killing of the bums on the street create a crazy feel of authenticity. The soundtrack is a mixture of unhinged synth sounds & guitar riffs. It’s shoestring budget & inexperience totally work for it and the gore FX still look freaky now.

  • Vice

This felt like an Oliver Stone film, cleverly chopped together keeping it snappy and entertaining. The tone of it just keeps slipping into darker places the further into Cheney’s career we head, reaching a peak of subversion after 9/11. Yeah Bale is brilliant & Rockwell as Bush, but he’s not in it as much as I expected. Relevant and quite a change from comedy man Mckay’s previous work.

  • Destroyer

Troubled detective Nicole Kidman gets spooked when an old acquaintance is back on the scene, setting her off on a journey down a dark path of revenge and regret. A third of the film is shown in flashbacks to the sour situation as an undercover cop that got her in the desperate state she currently finds herself. Kidman convincingly plays the broken, badass detective giving it all she’s got. Deserves anyone’s attention. Not sure about the title 'Destroyer' however ? kinda forgettable.
