this film is shot unbelievably well, i’ve never seen anything quite like it before. it begins very quickly and the speedy pace doesn't diminish until the very end, where the ending is actually rather abrupt. the accelerated pace of the film, along with the sudden blaring sounds which unfortunately come with the setting of a war zone, make for an intense atmosphere throughout which keeps you clutching to your seat. i must also address the outstanding acting from George MacKay. Mackay’s performance in 1917 is compelling. during my own watching of this film, i was made to feel as if i was in the collapsing trench with the soldiers myself, and i thought that i could genuinely feel the dust in my own throat. when an actor is able to effectively convince emotion like that, you know that the picture you’re watching is great.
