Matt’s review published on Letterboxd:
I was having one of those days where I just couldn’t concentrate or focus on anything. I was trying to get some work done, but that was a challenge, so I’m like “I need something familiar and that doesn’t require a lot of focus to throw on in the background.”
I’m looking around on prime and randomly land on Jason takes Manhattan almost immediately in my recommended movies. The Friday movies are some of my top go-to movies to put on when I just don’t know what else to watch. They’re great for just throwing on and turning off your brain, because you know exactly what you’re going to get. Weird as it may seem, they are kind of comfort movies for me.
Now, on my list where I ranked the series, I think I may have unfairly put Part 8 last. I really don’t dislike any of the Friday movies, but I mean, something had to be last. After watching it again today for the first time in awhile, I think I need to move it up a couple spots.
Everybody loves to dump on this one and yes, it’s got problems. I think if it wasn’t called “Jason takes Manhattan” and if it was just plain old Friday the 13th part 8, and the marketing wasn’t built around the NYC angle, people would be a lot kinder to this one. It’s the victim of expectations. I mean, yes, of course, I would love to see a whole movie of Jason running wild through NYC, but I’m good with what we got, which is a solid Friday movie. I actually like the boat setting, I’ve always liked Kane Hodder’s Jason, and there are some great kills in this one. I mean, the guy getting his head punched off is an all timer for me. Not to mention, how Jason gets disposed of is just as ridiculous as it is amazing.
So yeah, put me in the camp of people who will defend Part 8, because I’ll gladly watch it anytime.
