    back fill review - Kott is golden. For my money "Test" has the same sort of restrained magic realism as Andrei Tarkovsky's "Ivan's Childhood." Granted, "Test" is not on that level (no one is on Tarkovsky's level); but there is enough of the furtive electricity in the atmosphere that you know you are dealing with an all caps bold story teller.

    back fill review / multiple rewatches - "Pale Flower" is the quintessential Japanese noir. The only thing in the same zip code would be "The Man Without A Map" by Hiroshi Teshigahara. That 1968 film was one of 4 Teshigahara did based on novels by Kōbō Abe. These 4 comprise a suite whereas "Pale Flower" is a stand alone, so it is something of an apples and oranges comparo.
