For all the hate I expected a real disfigured abomination! I think those who did read the book will appreciate this one. There are countless times a classic is deformed in film, at least this one (mostly) gets it. If you can't get behind the pulpy melodramatic gothy-ness then this one just might not be for you. Good score, good drama, good violence... I would throw in the 1989 Phantom of the Opera for a real dark night.

Wow! How did this even get made by Hollywood?
I rolled my inner eyes when I first saw the preview, knowing how much they probably mucked it up, and putting it off until a voice inside told me to finally give it a chance.
This is as indie as this time period is ever going to get, and it is a credit to everyone involved on this production. Somehow they avoided every religious cliché and found a way to shine…
