A bit too "hip" stylistically for its own good, but the creativity of the actions the players were told to perform and the suspense around the more daring ones was pretty visceral. The ending was hokey, but I honestly wasn't expecting much different. If it weren't a Hollywood film, it would have ended badly, because that's how these sorts of things really end and been a real downer. So this time, I'll take the hokey ending. Sometimes it's okay to enjoy an unrealistic happy ending. I mean, that's why we watch movies, isn't it?

Whew! what an incredible film! Good acting, drama, humor, pathos... I was carried along from beginning to end and cannot think of a single criticism I have of the film. Truly. Holly Hunter and Ray Romano were absolutely brilliant as Emily's parents. I also appreciated how the film was adapted to heighten the drama but (at least based on the special feature interviews) still captured the spirit and even truth of the actual story.

This sort of thing doesn't seem so unusual now that the world has the Matrix and Inception and all sorts of reality-bending films. But when this came out, the Matrix had been in theaters for only a few weeks and had yet to make the worldwide impact (and spawn countless imitators) it has and continues to make. Existenz was not quite as easily accessible,…
