I'm an embarrassment to my race for not having seen this mandatory Black Cinema until today, but I did have the ending spoiled by a rap song a few years ago and I can't think of anything more black than that.
Pardon me for this #cinema #hot #take but I find that detractors of this film are less generous to it than they would be to any other anthropological study of a group they're not a part of. And I mean, I get it. I was a stuffed-in-the-lockers type too. But this is such a fascinating and fun movie that it wins you over.
On this second viewing its themes of identity and discovery and ritual popped even more. I just love this film so much.
