The initial lampooning and modern reappraisal of this movie is fascinating and baffling. Yes, it's messy as shit. The precision of the first film is reinterpreted, troubled, and queered into something far more challenging; the Wachowskis looking at the optimistic fantasy they'd built and reaching inside to puncture vital organs. But even in that new uncertainty, there is so much hope, so much love, such a profound rejection of cynicism even in the most dire of times.

    I get why…

Top tier entry in the canon of aesthetically gorgeous, reactionary Japanese media about the internet as a destabilizing social force. There is a devastating drama buried here about the aftermath of suicide - the banal normality of existing in spaces previously inhabited by friends now filled only with doubt and grief - but it's flattened into a cartoonish anxiety of the internet as an inherently isolating and alienating technology.

There are certainly conversations to be had about how the internet…

Starting off Halloween with one of the first horror movies. Surprised how little adjusting it took to get into the rhythm of the silent film format, I haven't seen any since I was a kid but there's enough text exposition and compelling visuals that I wasn't as disoriented as I feared (helps that the BFI restoration and recoloration looks phenomenal, purists be damned). The state of modern comedies bums me out. Thought this would really work for me as I've been on a big 00s teen comedy kick, but left the theater having had exactly zero (0) laughs. Like every comedy now this is primarily a vehicle for improv skits that undercut the handful of jokes that land by having someone interject with something like "wow that's crazy." There are some funny bits sprinkled throughout a deluge of Twitter clap backs, but they're…

Moments when I transcended the human form and became pure queer energy:
    - Bernadette beating up a shitty gay for deadnaming her
    - Hugo Weaving in a dress made of flip flops
    - "I Will Survive" didgeridoo remix
    - a three foot tall hat in the shape of a peacock
    - Felicia sitting in a giant stiletto, on top of a moving van, in a cloud of pink smoke, lip syncing opera

CW: deadnaming, homophobic violence, child sexual abuse (it doesn't happen but the lead up is horrible), dead animals, weird racist East Asian stereotypes
