The stop-motion papercraft animation is some of the most astounding you'll ever see. Too bad it's sandwiched between a mostly mediocre CG coming of age movie.

The last 30 minutes at least break up the monotony by swinging for the fences, even if it rushes itself a bit. But all in all you just kinda wish we were given a fuller adaptation of the more abstract and beautiful scenes from the source material.

We're still doing the whole "robots just wanna be humans" thing after all this time, huh? Well, at least this is quite pretty and appropriately moody but only in the most superficial ways. Villeneuve can only do one mode -- dread -- that he does pretty well for the most part but in the end it meant for every other emotional beat I felt basically nothing.

Great as Gosling is in this, he's given no favors by K being an underwhelmingly written protagonist. Movie would've been vastly improved were it about Joi or Deckard, the only two pieces of the movie I felt any emotion towards.

Test screening of the (somewhat) unfinished product, so I can't really say anything terribly specific about why I really liked this, but MAN, I really really liked this. Incredibly gorgeous throwback to classical, gothic horror a la Edgar Allen Poe (with tinges of Lovecraft). Dug the hell out of it.
