Honestly it felt like the gimmick ended up getting in the way here. There are some moments throughout the film that really work, but within the one-shot premise and the single-day narrative they feel like they've been lifted out of context from a better movie.

Also I actually really liked the one-scene use of bigger actors, it felt like their outsized presence within the film mirrored the roles that they were playing in the narrative, either as officers or other characters that had emotional stakes attached to them.

I swear to god half of this movie is Robert Redford running away from men with guns

Cute and functional, but not really all that interesting. In the moment, the cinematography and the music can combine to give the impresion that something interesting is happening, but beyond that Elgort is outmatched and overwhelmed by his co-stars.

How do you write a story that's basically just high-concept generational warfare without engaging with that premise beyond a single throwaway line?

If Nolan was less interested in making things needlessly convoluted this probably could have been a really good film, but as it stands it's a very competent action movie that thinks it's deeper than it is.
