I've never seen any of Vanderbeek's work until now and I loved it! I can certainly see the influence he had on Terry Gilliam and his work with Monty Python. Only 10 minutes long but a wild ride!
I'd heard mixed things about this film but I must say I was pleasantly surprised. It's a difficult thing to film something as visceral as Suskind's novel, so deeply reliant on descriptions of smells and interior life. The opening act reflects this struggle but as the movie gained momentum, I found myself bound up in the intense alienation of Grenouille and his obsession with the ultimate scent.
