Like his documentary on Kurt Cobain, Brett Morgan's David Bowie doc is put together with an impressive array of clips, music, and sounds. The editing embraces the chaos in a way that works, and Bowie's own words help to illuminate his thinking at different periods of his life. This is not your standard documentary, but David Bowie wasn't your standard rock star.
Extended cut (9/21/23)
First time seeing the extended cut, though I've seen the original on VHS (but not widescreen). This one I saw on laserdisc, and while it looked good, a proper viewing would be on Blu-ray, 4K, or film.
Regardless of the format, this is a great film, and the extended cut adds more detail without slowing down the narrative. Even though it's over 30 years old, it still holds up beautifully, and man is that John Barry score gorgeous (as is the cinematography).
I was going to give this a better rating -- even though there are better adaptations of A Christmas Carol -- but then they just kept singing.
I’ve always threatened to walk out of a movie before, but never have. Friends, I walked out of PASOLINI with about 20 minutes to go. And while I did jump back in to see the ending (kinda had to, since I was projecting the film and had to know when to turn the lights up), it doesn’t change my opinion that this movie has no idea where it’s going and no real interest in its characters, story, or plot.
