    The Lion King

    ★★★★½

Out of a library of dozens of animated classics spanning over 70 years, picking the all-time greatest Disney film can be a hard task, especially since it's all subjective. One strong contender for that spot however easily has to be The Lion King, a Shakesphere inspired tale set in the African heartland.

In the middle of the Savannah, a new king is born. That new king is Simba, who grows up destined to succeed his father Mufassa as the next…

  • Blue Thunder

    Blue Thunder

    ★★★½

A Dan O'Bannon-scripted affair directed by John Badham of Saturday Night Fever, WarGames). Anything with Roy Scheider is usually worth a watch, and Blue Thunder is an entertaining enough rarity that didn't prove otherwise.

Scheider plays an LAPD helicopter pilot Frank Murphy, who pilots over the streets of L.A assisting any officers on the ground. An ex-Vietnam Vet suffering from PTSD, he is assigned under control of a hot new attack helicopter (known as 'Blue Thunder') after a city councilwoman…

    Felidae

    ★★★½

A very odd affair here, though I suppose it's not the worst way to kick 2019 off. This German-produced animation as been regarded as one of the more brutal films of it's type, and I'd have to agree with that sentiment. If you thought Watership Down and The Plague Dogs were unusually graphic, those pale in comparison to Felidae.

Essentially a neo-noir with cats, Felidae is about Francis, a domestic cat who gets sucked into a murder mystery as bodies…

    Bullet in the Head

    ★★★★

Finishing off the year with a previously-unseen John Woo crime-epic. What was originally meant to be the third instalment of A Better Tomorrow, Bullet in the Head attempts to be his most ambitious film yet, a large-scale war-based drama combined with his usual brand of heroic bloodshed. The result for me isn't up there with his absolute best, but it's still a more than worthy addition to his filmography.

Set around the backdrop of the late 1960s, Ben, Paul, and…

    The Thing (1982)

NOTE: This review has been edited and revised excessively over time to fit my changing style.

Yeah, I'll always have a soft spot for this one. The Thing stands as one of my all-time favourite sci-fi/horror films. Hell, I'd even consider it the best thing that John Carpenter ever did. This was my first ever exposure to the director's work, as well as Kurt Russell, and since…

  • Baby Driver

    Baby Driver

    ★★★★½

NOTE: As of October 31st, one major actor name has been removed from this review for obvious reasons.

Edgar Wright has done it again.

I've always been a massive fan of his work since the Cornetto trilogy, so of course that Baby Driver was on my horizon for a good while. I knew I'd love it, but my expectations were surpassed immensely. Action-packed, well-cast, and brilliantly-directed from start to finish, it pretty much has everything I'd want in this kind…
