    TIFF 6

The Fabelmans is a collection of Spielberg's greatest hits, all delivered to their greatest effect. There’s laughter, tears, and wonder in this story that is much more than the sum of its parts. If Spielberg climbs the Dolby Theatre steps to collect his third Best Director Oscar, then it will be one of the few long overdue wins that came at the right time for the right project.

Phantom Thread meets Vertigo in Park Chan-wook's twisty Decision to Leave.

Surprisingly hilarious with a director's assured fingerprints all over the material. Always engaging enough to keep you glued throughout its intricately layered mystery.

    ★★★

If you thought the intricately layered works of John le Carré (Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, The Night Manager ) weren’t complex enough or didn’t have nearly enough frenzied shootouts, then Lee Jung-jae has something for you in Hunt. He treats his debut as if it's the bus in Speed, never letting it go under 55 mph in fear that the nitrate itself will instantaneously combust.

Your two options are to accept that situation and ride this bus all the way…

A great Thanksgiving watch because Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton are having an absolute feast with this dialogue.

Enola Holmes 2 exemplifies the old adage that more is not always better. Thankfully, the overabundance of charm and style makes its nearly 130-minute runtime go by without much bother. For the next one, let’s hope they focus on quality rather than quantity.

    Chevalier

    ★★★★

    TIFF #8

Chevalier is the surprise of the fest so far! Stephen Williams' direction and Kelvin Harrison Jr.'s performance are filled with as much confidence as the titular character's iconic compositions. It may overplay its hand in its messaging and themes on racial communities, but a figure of this historical importance deserves a big swing.
