The scare sequences were impressive, and a fun glimpse at the type of spooktacular haunt sequences Wan would go on to master in Insidious and The Conjuring, but the script and story are painfully flat, and the shoddy performances do nothing to elevate them.
I loved this fantastic little movie. The performances, rather than the horror, were at the center. Everyone here feels lived-in. The mystery is compelling, and the third act had me squirming in my chair.
Undoubtedly a classic. I’m a little embarrassed it took me 32 years to watch this movie, but I’m glad I did. I wished I watched it a little earlier in the day, because it FEELS like a movie from 1942. Still, I enjoyed it.
