All Quiet on the Western Front does an amazing job at conveying perspective, especially before the protagonist is introduced, but what it excels most at is its use of atmosphere. It’s minimalistic soundtrack hammered into my head the abject cruelty of the war machine. Its turning and churning all done by the elites of each nation at the expense of its citizens. This is far better than 1917 in my opinion and well worth watching for everyone to truly understand how war unfolds.

I knew it was going to be long for a reason, and the film plays like a novel come to life. If anyone’s read a novel they know slow scenes are bound to be used, for character growth or what-have-you. All in all I thought the portrayal of someone with alcoholism really touched me. The movie is worth seeing for the writing.
