The hype is real: Denzel Washington is incredible here… but besides his performance (and Ethan Hawke’s—to a much lesser extent) and a fairly gripping atmosphere, Training Day is wanting for meat on its bones (most particularly a function of its Swiss cheese plotline). Fun but forgettable.
I don’t think I’ve ever watched a film that has made me feel more than Mulholland Drive. It’s complex yet unassuming, terrifying yet hilarious, forwards yet backwards and all at once.
Highlights: cinematography, color, sound, music, Naomi Watts
Overall: absolutely stunning.
