It's a fast-paced, action-packed, finely choreographed, quasi-expressionist melodrama (not musical) with the gravitational catharsis of a Greek tragedy.

What makes this film cook isn't just the super-simple-yet-no-less-high-stakes dramatic narrative, the far-above-par performances of each and every actor and actress on screen, nor the passionately curated screenplay and soundtrack.

What makes this film sizzle is that it is all these things coalescing into a stunning piece of popular high art.

    Top favorite movie of 2017.

    ★★★★

Lady Bird is clever and witty and winsome and charming all at a breakneck speed (which would normally turn me off, but for this I didn't mind the pace as much). It's an excellent film that deserves the majority of the accolades it's receiving. My only qualm is that I felt like I missed a few things because I would laugh at something in one scene, and then it moved on to the next scene before I stopped laughing. Rewatchability is strong with this one, though, so I'm sure I'll get the whole picture one day.

My girlfriend and I both saw this yesterday. We had to drive to a theater an hour and a half away, but DATGUM was it worth it. I honestly didn't expect to love it so much, and my girlfriend didn't bring enough tissues. Feel good movie of the season for sure. Everyone should be proud of this film, and everyone else should go see it.

This is a beautifully crafted film with excellent writing, excellent performances, and all the heart and soul that can be mustered within the medium. My only misgiving concerns the denouement; I am not content with leaving the character of Lee Chandler where the film leaves him.

Casey Affleck deserves every bit of praise he's received for his portrayal of Lee. Most of Affleck's power comes through his eyes. When Lee broods (and a lot of camera time is dedicated to…
