    Underworld: Blood Wars

    ★★

The UNDERWORLD franchise is so convoluted. Decent action, but far too complicated for the fluff film that it is.

Mary Jackson should be on the $20 bill. What an inspirational American.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

It's best to start off with the good: Eli Roth's much delayed (it was playing at TIFF when I was in Toronto in 2013) homage to the now ever so politically incorrect Cannibal genre is beautifully filmed. Cinematographer Antonio Quercia got the most out of the amazing on location shoot, with deep emerald greens and reds so vivid they'd make Argento jealous. It may be the prettiest cannibal movie ever filmed.

    Captive

I didn't realize, going into Captive, that it was a religious movie.
I never actually read the synopsis of these things, so I was surprised to see the movie, starring Kate Mara, open with a bible quote. That usually doesn't bode well for me, and, on it's own merits, Captive lived up to the expectations of a movie targeted at the 'faith n' forgiveness' crowd.

I texted through most of it. The people who snuck in left after 10 minutes.
