    Look, I wasn't expecting greatness. But, even as someone who isn't particularly attached to the Mario brand, I repeatedly found myself thinking "This is seriously the best they could do?".

    Cute, colourful animation and a few scenes that charmingly pay tribute to the games are let down by weak jokes, first-draft dialogue and a story so focused on cramming in as many references to the games as possible that it rushes frantically from set-piece to set-piece, never allowing its characters to develop beyond one-dimensional cutouts. And I'm sorry, but in a world where THE LEGO MOVIE exists, that just isn't going to cut it for me.
