It's like Mulholland Drive meets A Star is Born, but stupid.
A very polished and assured adaptation of a great pulp novel. I do think Fincher is getting too much credit (due to his reputation) for "elevating" the material. The book was a satire about marriage and the media, and so is the film. He basically shot the novel page for page. Fincher's true triumph here, in addition to his usual technical mastery, was in the excellent casting and direction of the performances. Affleck and Pike have never been better, and the supporting cast is spot on.
