HOOPTOBER 4.0: WHAT'S ON THE MENU?
FILM #7 OF 33: THE INVISIBLE MAN

"He's invisible, that's what's the matter with him."

Why oh why did I sit on this movie for so long before watching it? This was sublime.

Claude Rains commands the screen largely via voice alone in a truly wonderful, utterly deranged performance as the Invisible Man. The title's madman is just sitting there, excitedly chatting about ideas to murder and sabotage for his own enjoyment. I love…

Throughout Akira Kurosawa’s illustrious career the director often adapted classic literature from overseas and transformed the stories into tales about Japan. Some of his favorite writers that he took the most inspiration from were Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, and Maxim Gorky, but it’s the Shakespeare adaptations that made for the most interesting films. Kurosawa did away with Shakespeare’s words but kept the tragic plots largely intact. Shakespeare’s Macbeth became Throne of Blood, a film about a samurai that commits murder in order…

I liked MORTAL ENGINES. The story is fairly predictable but the world is enjoyably bonkers. Like MAD MAX meets Miyazaki -- though, admittedly, not as good as either. Some well done action and an above average score make for a decent amount of thrills. Well worth watching and better deserving than its current box office flop status.

If TRON and TETSUO: THE IRON MAN got together, their weirdo kid would probably look a lot like SEQUENCE BREAK.

    HOOPTOBER 4.0: WHAT’S ON THE MENU?– FILM #2 of 33: CHILD’S PLAY

    ”Hi, I’m Chucky. Wanna play?”

I never saw any of the Chucky films before. As a kid, I thought they sounded too scary. And then when I became a horror fan in my teens, I thought they sounded too childish. Funny how that goes. And while I try not to prejudge movies as much anymore, for some reason Chucky just kept getting left behind. So, I decided this…

HoopTober 5.0: Here There Be Monsters
"Marines have no qualms about killing Martians!"

I'd never seen this before. Or the original. I was surprised by how very Invasion of the Body Snatchers it was. Like, Body Snatchers for kids. But Body Snatchers is still a damn unsettling story, and though this film is geared towards a younger audience it still maintains some of that unsettling nature. Too much? Maybe so. I feel like it's potentially too scary for kids, too…
