The most impressive aspects of this are the visuals and the attention to detail in depicting aspects of Colombian culture. Still, Disney has been retelling the same moral for the past decade so nothing really hit the way I wanted it to. Maybe I’m just old and crotchety.

The antagonist in this movie is undone via precisely the same method as Anton Ego in Ratatouille

That being said, what an unexpected narrative! I thought I was getting an offbeat criminal underworld thriller with a pig replacing the usual kidnapped daughter or child; instead it’s something much more sincere and surprisingly meaningful with a beautiful and tightly woven quilt of performances, Nicolas Cage’s being chief among them. Of course he’ll be ignored come awards season but this whole film just goes to show how simplicity really can win out.
