2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★★★

I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that.

Complete and utter cinematic perfection. There is perhaps no purer expression of the visual majesty of cinema than the stargate sequence. It's hypnotic, delirious, bizarre, transportive, magical, magnificent moviemaking at its finest.

This re-watch has only affirmed my statement in the description of my top 100 that, along with Persona, Lawrence of Arabia, and Apocalypse Now, 2001 is one of the rare few perfect films in existence.

This is a film that expands the scope of what you feel is possible in the form. As it progresses from fairly straightforward narrative to something far more abstract, I can't help but feel Kubrick has shown us what cinema can be: a form of pure visual emotive expression; a way of communicating beyond language.

Still, after Persona, the best film I've ever seen. Still the most essential of essential viewing. Still Kubrick's best IMO. Still my second favorite Kubrick after The Shining. Still a 5/5.
