And now, Tom Cruise not being Ethan Hunt.

I can kind of see how there was such a lukewarm reception to this. I don’t care. It’s kinetic, packed with locations, humor, and shady CIA politics which I fell for hook, line, and sinker.

I don’t think film buffs are aware of how well Cruise can act. I haven’t seen him in a turn like this. The audience connection is still based on charisma, sure, but he adds an ilk to this character that makes us a little weary of him. Is this acting? I don’t know.

    Whatever. I liked this.

How is this being lauded as worse than its predecessors? Abrams crafts a fine blockbuster here where the biggest scene lands in the middle. It's not the stunt-filled spectacle that the next three M:I films are, but it is a great spy movie and an establishment of an Ethan Hunt we recognize in the subsequent franchise entries. Philip Seymour Hoffman delivers some really meaty work here as the only good villain in the series before Sean Harris shows up.

Tom Cruise yelling “SHIT” in the middle of that helicopter chase is somehow the realest thing I’ve ever seen in a blockbuster.

One of those films where every small detail serves the story or the character well. Wasn’t in love with it on the first viewing, but it’s grown on me since.

    Gosling’s first real shining moment.
