Sorry, I wrote this and it ended up just being me gushing about Christopher Nolan without giving any insight on this film. Sorry.
Christopher Nolan is a masterful filmmaker and yet I forget this every time I sit down to watch one of his films. No director, not Kubrick, not Spielberg, not Fincher, has a higher percentage of absolute masterpieces in their filmography as Nolan. He has a distinct viewpoint, but doesn’t use his expertise as a director to indulge in long takes or other showy gimmicks, he makes the most genuine, profound picture possible in a modest way. Dunkirk and Insterstellar have proved him to be of the greats, but for me, Inception is where he really proved he was more than just “the Batman director.”
