i had heard that "My Own Private Idaho" was inspired by Shakespeare's Henriad, but I had no idea how closely it followed some points. I personally found those sections clunky and affected (plus there was some misunderstanding of the points that Shakespeare was trying to make, but that's a whole other post). The heightened dialogue took me out of the moment. The original sections were much more dramatically engaging. Those were the moments when I was locked in. The campfire scene was riveting, I was on the edge of my seat like it was a thriller. The artsier touches were clever and didn't detract from the story. River Phoenix's performance was so spellbinding that I missed him whenever he wasn't on screen. I wanted to follow him more.
