Vox Lux ★★★★½

WOW. Not only was this a great start to TIFF but Corbet delivers a strong second film that features what just might be Portman's best performance yet (move aside Jackie).

While The Childhood of a Leader explores the making of a monster mostly through the lens of the past, Vox Lux treads along similar territory but keeps the narrative even; showcasing both the past and present as a nightmarish cycle.

The 35mm cinematography is stunning (especially during that finale) along with the sharp soundtrack of Scott Walker and Sia, whose very own contributions provide the "vox lux" of Portman's Celeste (for the appearance, think Bowie and Britney Spears).

I can't wait to revisit this one soon but most importantly, Corbet has certainly distinguished himself as another ambitious American filmmaker to look forward to. Next up, First Man this Sunday!
