Sunset Boulevard ★★★★½

52 Years in 52 Weeks: 16/52

What a performance from Gloria Swanson, who plays an aging Hollywood silent film star desperate to return to the spotlight. She lives a life of isolation until random chance delivers a young and handsome screenwriter to her doorstep: 10086 Sunset Blvd.

The leads are both remarkably well-written and complex characters. Coming from such very different life experiences, neither is easy to love nor easy to hate. Their motives are strange, yet sympathetic. I'm always impressed by a film that can reveal its climax in the opening, then backtrack to show how we get there without spoiling the journey. Utterly memorable and deserving of all its praise.
