Not a lot of substance, but a shit-ton of style. Excessive use of slow-motion and swabs of neon. Trance-inducing pacing and an analog synthesizer-drenched musical score. Beyond the Black Rainbow has a ton of influences that it wears proudly on its sleeves, but somehow, something was lost in translation. The film tips over from homage into pastiche, and never fully redeems itself. Although Beyond the Black Rainbow very much falls into the trappings of a first-time directorial debut, I am eagerly optimistic about seeing Panos Cosmatos' future projects, especially the upcoming Mandy.
