A rare film from Slovenia, which received distribution in the United States, Consequences is an interesting look at a troubled youth whose repeat criminal behavior lands him at a juvenile facility against his wishes. This an incisive look at toxic male teenage behavior combined with the growing emergence of repressed homosexuality. The lead actor has a way of combining both the internal empathy of his situation, and the hard exterior shell that is needed to survive under stressful situations. There are no easy answers, and the film doesn’t try to shoehorn an unrealistic ending.

Brandon Cronenberg’s Possesor is a great step up from his previous effort with an extremely provocative and well shot film that mixes science fiction and horror. We follow a corporate assassin who melds her mind into her target’s mind and forces them to commit the crime. Andrea Riseborough, as the assassin and Christopher Abbott as the target are both outstanding in realizing that things are extremely wrong. Abbott’s character is really given a depth rarely seen in films of this sort. This raises all sorts of existential questions, visceral gore, and a harrowing plot line that makes it a very satisfying watch

This anti-thriller is actually an adult drama that is heavy on philosophy and dialogue. Ostensibly about a corrupt deal that goes wrong, characters have long conversations on screen about life and consequences. If you know that going in, there's a better chance you will like the film.

Loveless is exciting in the sense you are watching a master filmmaker at work in displaying a culture and country that has lost a certain degree of humanity along the way.
