Adam Grossman’s review published on Letterboxd:
CRITERION CHANNEL MOVIE OF THE WEEK
The stalker. The writer. The professor.
Tarkovsky’s camera floats and flows and pulls away and pulls you in with the hands of someone who was clearly a master of his craft.
This is the kind of cinema I hoped the Criterion Channel would introduce me to - something I likely never would’ve made time for otherwise - and the restoration is so tactile and pristine.
The cinematography will be cited by most but the sound mix and set design are equals to it.
A heady meditation on faith, hope, materialism, humanity and happiness, and all the various (and very personal) interpretations of what those words mean.
“My conscience wants vegetarianism to win over the world. And my subconscious is yearning for a piece of juicy meat. But what do I want?”
