Oh man, what a tour de force of animation technique. I've been watching some Stan Brakhage films lately, too, and quite honestly this almost seemed Brakhage-esque in some ways, how it paints a portrait with editing and without any dialogue. Far-fetched? Maybe. Of course it's more accessible than Brakhage! Just amazing.

Fairly cheesy, but still a remarkable record of a time and place, growing up as a teenager near Orange County. All I knew about this movie was that it was about skateboarding, but there's also some stuff with the Vietnamese refugee community that I found interesting, too. I'm not gonna claim this is great cinema, but there is more going on here than you might think otherwise.

Like a whole lot of "hey wouldn't it be cool if I put this in a movie?" without good execution.

Another in my series of "movies in the pop culture ether that I had not watched all the way through" series, in this case I grew up in an age when John Travolta was seen as a joke and disco was haram to many, but boy does this movie sizzle. And not just in the dance scenes, but in the contrast between the disco and the world outside of the disco, where Tony hangs out with his asshole friends, lives…
