The Addiction 1995
Scared the shit out of me. Fucking brilliant 82 minute vampire drama about the allure of self destruction in a world so easily capable of genocidal cruelty. We’re watching a naïve just-bitten philosophy student succumb to incoherent doomerism & desensitization while — as (blood) addiction takes hold — her course study makes her confront imagery out of WWII concentration camps, razed villages, etc. And soon enough victim becomes victimizer. This take on vampirism makes a lot of obvious allusions to heroin but it works extremely well & the gestures at queerness/AIDS paranoia especially got me. & Lili Taylor my god; just a full-on deterioration of both body & soul.
