    No One Will Save You

Well-crafted, shot and acted. It gets right to the point and never lets up. There’s some terrifically executed sequences with phenomenal sound design and I’m a huge proponent of the minimal dialogue. That said, I think the alien designs could’ve been much less derivative and a lot more threatening. The CGI looks cartoonish fairly often. Duffield also relies too much on fairly bland alien and trauma tropes that I don’t think are interesting or complex, especially considering Brynn isn’t very…

There's Something Wrong with the Children

    ★½

Conceptually solid, but poorly executed and frustratingly half-baked. It’s packaged in every predictable horror trope you can imagine. The only thing wrong with the children is how outrageously annoying they are. The performances, especially Gilford, are incredibly weak. He’s clearly not up for the task. The score also doesn’t match the movie it’s in either. It’s desperately trying to curate a sense of dread and unease when it’s simply not there. They could’ve left, but they were too busy stirring up boring heterosexual relationship drama. This is a pro-choice anthem, though. I respect that, even if it’s unintentional.

I’m disappointed with this. Hyper-stylized directing has to be met with a compelling story, or at least a justifiable reason to bathe in excess, but I feel as though the stylization over-took that. I was left with a convoluted and unnecessarily choppy Hitchcock homage completely devoid of engaging storytelling. As things progressed, I became more and more disengaged. I felt no emotional connection to these characters, nor did I feel compelled by the mystery. Frankly, the mystery wasn’t good or…

    American Sniper

American Sniper is a big pile of exploitive garbage that panders to its viewers with some of the most blatant ethnocentrism. America saves and destroys faceless Muslims for 2+ hours. It exploits patriotism and offers no depth to anything. Eastwood knows Americans will buy this as long as it's in the guise of patriotism. Although calling this patriotic is a joke. It's glorification of violence and America. We are better than everyone else. We are heroes. It's a disingenuous cash-grab.…
