  A filmmaking triumph.

  Robert Eggers takes $90 million and goes out on a high-wire, never coming down for the entirety of this film's runtime. There were whispers of studio interference, but apart from perhaps benefitting from some additional time to let scenes breathe, this is an Eggers film through and through.   I had low expectations going in but this completely sank below them. 

  Great production design and costuming (NOT makeup - yeesh) wasted on a film that seems more concerned with getting to the next major plot point and/or song instead of telling a fleshed-out story with fleshed-out characters. Many of the characters are extremely unlikeable simply due to their lack of depth. The musical sequences are shot like music videos instead of a film. 

  This review doesn’t have a strong structure, but neither does the film.

  I don’t want to talk about this film anymore.

  FUCK ME. I have witnessed what may be the greatest war film ever made. I know that has been said a lot about this film, but goddamn is it true. I may have had to watch it on a VHS from my local library, but it was well worth it. I urge you to seek out this film if you haven't done so already. Everything in this film is stellar and I truly do urge you to watch it immediately.

  This line being included in the trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was not a random decision. We were clearly being warned in advance about this film. Little did we know, this was not referring to the story itself. 

  We were being told that Rian Johnson was flipping the Star Wars saga on its head.

  Johnson is clearly making a bigger statement with this film about the toxic obsession…
