    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

I think we ought to stop with these for a while… again.

    The Breaker Upperers

This is bloody good. Don’t get enough films like this out of NZ cinema, please can we have more!

  • Ready Player One

    Ready Player One

Not familiar with the source material, but this felt pretty messy and rushed. The CG also has this look to it that I’ve never really enjoyed - it doesn’t quite look real, but it’s not quite stylised - and ends up looking a bit tacky.

Some enjoyable moments, but I was ready for it to end soo we than it did.

  • Stray

Not a traditional film in many ways, but a really good looking film with a refreshingly slow burn. It’s simplicity in focusing on two characters and witnessing struggles with their own pasts and demons is really nicely put together.

A film possibly not for everyone, but an excellent piece of NZ filmmaking 👌

  • Tomb Raider

    Tomb Raider

Not bad, but nothing special. Having enjoyed some of the more recent games and the interactive cinema experience they provide, this just ends feeling like when you're 12 years old and have to watch your older cousin play games for 2 hours.

Vikander is good - streets ahead of Angeline Jolie's effort - but the film itself lets the rest down.

    A Quiet Place

I did really enjoy this, I just needed a little bit more!

  • Ocean's Eight

    Ocean's Eight

Good fun and a welcome refresher to the franchise.

  • Solo: A Star Wars Story

    Solo: A Star Wars Story

Maybe not a perfect film, but this was every bit the Han Solo film I needed.

Alden Ehrenreich is great, although Donald Glover is better; L3 is a fantastic addition to the Star Wars robot line up.; there’s enough Millenium Falcon to make anyone feel like a kid again; and Chewie finally gets the screen time the old softy deserves.

  • Deadpool 2

    Deadpool 2

    Superb, again.

  • Avengers: Infinity War

    Avengers: Infinity War

Not without its problems, but what’s great more than makes up for it 👌

I’ve enjoyed most of Marvel’s efforts the last 10 years, but I’m certainly left looking forward to a new era of the Nolan Dark Knight style hero again. I just need a breather from saving the universe.

  • Annihilation

Michel Gondry, Chris Cunningham and Spike Jonze walk into a bar…

  • Black Panther

    Black Panther

I believed the hype, and wasn't disappointed.

A return to form for the superhero genre in that it doesn't come down to saving the planet or the universe. Instead we have a bunch of characters defending something close to them.

The CGI was second to a very few, forming a really handsome film with a distinct palette.

Could've been a touch longer though, as it doesn't quite serve as an origin story without more telling us more about how the Black Panther came to be - this is sadly only served by a 2 minute story telling at the film opening.
