Turns out China’s top grossing movie of all time is... fine. Perfectly respectable and predictably jingoistic, it’s most interesting in the ways that it differs from western action movies. For one thing, there is a deep respect for authority and the government/military chain of command - no rogue agents or evil generals here. There’s also a telling suggestion that no matter your nationality, if you have Chinese blood, China has obligations to you - and vice versa...
