Won't You Be My Neighbor? ★★★½

It’s impossible to separate any assessment of a documentary like this from an appreciation for its saintly subject matter, but in the midst of the current trends infecting the genre (namely, multi-episode bloat), director Morgan Neville does an exemplary job at editing this 94-minute piece.  Right out of the gate, Neville foregoes the obligatory childhood narrative and dives right in to the evolution of the Mr. Rogers character/man.  Still, having seen the trailer for this film on the same day as The Tale some weeks back, I wish Neville had spent less time countering the FoxNews nonsense and instead addressed the real elephant in the room: Could Mr. Rogers truly be considered a role mode in a contemporary culture that has come to fundamentally distrust any adult male who takes an interest in children?
